Seven tables at the end of the ground floor, open four evenings a week. Everything described on this page happens face to face, in the building.
Where the house stands
Our hope is that a guest plays for an evening, enjoys it and goes up to bed, and doesn't play until closing and brood on the train home. We built the room with that in mind: seven tables, closing at two, no credit at any time, no cash machine anywhere in the building, and a bar that stops serving before the tables close.
Over-18s, every visit
The age is eighteen. Identification is checked at the door every time you come in, however long you have been staying at the hotel. We accept a passport, a Finnish identity card or a driving licence showing a date of birth. Nobody under 18 enters at any hour, whatever the reason.
What staff will do, there and then
- Hold a limit. Give them your figure before you sit down and it is written down and kept for the evening, or ask them to suggest one.
- Tell you the time. Say when you want to be told and you will be, without any fuss.
- Keep your seat. Step out to the hall for twenty minutes and it will still be there.
- Keep you out for a while. Tell the desk you don't want to be admitted for a number of days, and that is written down and followed.
- Self-exclusion. You sign at the desk, it takes effect that evening, and it is lifted only by returning to that desk in person, never by telephone, whoever is calling.
None of this is done through the website, on purpose. It is all a conversation with someone who can see your face.
Worth noticing in yourself
- Staying later than you decided to, on more evenings than you decided to.
- Going back the next night chiefly to get back what went the night before.
- Being imprecise with whoever you came with about how the evening went.
- Thinking about the room while you are doing the thing you came to Tampere to do.
- Putting in money that was meant for the rest of the trip.
One of these alone means little. Three together are worth taking seriously, and the staff here have had that conversation before and don't make an occasion of it.
Training
Anyone working that floor is briefed before a first shift and twice a year after: setting and holding a limit, handling a guest who has drunk too much, taking a self-exclusion without fuss, and when to fetch the duty manager instead of managing alone. The duty manager is in the building every evening the room is open.
How to ask
Tell whoever is on the floor, or ask at the desk between seven in the morning and eleven at night. You don't need an appointment or an explanation, and it is dealt with there and then.
