Two saunas

One wood-fired, one electric, and a tank of river-cold water

This is Finland, and the sauna is treated as part of the building's plumbing.

The wood-fired sauna is heated on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from four in the afternoon and is the one people queue for. The electric one is on every day from seven in the morning until ten at night.

Both are mixed and swimsuit-free, which is normal here and mentioned only because it isn't everywhere. The washing room sits between them. The cold tank stands against the river wall and is fed from the rapids, so its temperature depends on what the rapids are doing.

How it works

Free to use, and no booking

You don't book and there are no sessions: you go down, use it and go back up. If the wood-fired one is full, people wait on the bench outside, and it is rarely for long because nobody stays in there for forty minutes.

Reception won't reserve a sauna for a private party. People have asked, and the answer has always been no.
